Course description:
The Andes are home to more than 60% of the vegetal foods of the planet’s diet nowadays, Andean peoples developed those varieties since pre-historical times.
Within this class we search to provide them with information on the Andean environment and the diverse techniques used to adapt plants, develop seeds and spread technologies throughout the different peoples and environments.
We will Visit the Ecological center of “Inka” an NGO devoted to develop ecological awareness amongst Cusco students, in which facilities we will have the class.
Time depending de offer optional visits to the University of Cusco, Genetic research center, and Irrigation programs at the experimental agricultural center of Zurite, and the ancient. And the Inka agricultural center of Moray (full day)

Academic Objectives:

The students will be able to acquire and understand the differences between the agriculture in their respective countries, and that one developed in the Andes, through comparison of ecological & environmental conditions.

The students will learn about diverse applied technologies to the mountain slopes, swamps and other conditions.

The students will be able to watch samples of Andean products in display at the experimental center.

The students will understand those civilizations before the Inkas developed genetic adaptations of seeds that led them to find new varieties of plants.

They will study traditional tools and how they evolved to the present ones, storage systems and other technologies, both ancient and contemporary.

They will learn about crops in the Andes and Amazon, Andean foods, nutrition levels and productive yields.
Achievements
Knowing the geographical environment in the Andes that determines diverse ecological levels, from the Coastal deserts and valleys to the rainforest in the Amazon, via mountain valleys, slopes and plateaus. The students will have a greater appreciation of Andean Agriculture and how it is related to the Geography.
The students will be aware that the occupation of this territory by indigenous cultures determined the development of diverse technologies in both agriculture and the management of water supplies. |
