Course description:
Quechua is the language of the Inkas that still survives in the Andes It is spoken by more than 8 million people in 6 countries. The quechua course was designed to make the students aware of the different sounds and a few structures
It is an introductory class with lots of practice and humor.

Materials:
Name tags, flash cards, transparencies, booklet. If there is more interest we can introduce them to Quechua Poetry, Drama and Literature.

Academic Objectives:

  • The students will attempt to understand the very complex inner world of the native speakers, their personal and their affective relationships.
  • The students will have an introduction to semantics and phonetics which are completely different from European languages, and they are the expression of a different world-view that seeks another type of approach the environment.
  • The students will learn some idiomatic expressions and simple dialogues for interaction with Quechua speaking people.
  • The students will understand the grammar structure of this language, such as the agglutination of the sentences into one word.
  • The students will learn a set of 20 basic verbs.
  • They will be able to conjugate verbs in the present continuous tense.
  • They will learn how to make a few questions.
  • They will master a few expressions to be used when they contact Quechua speakers on the streets, or in the markets of the city.
  • They will also approach an understanding of the challenges of being bilinguals in the development of contemporary society.

Achievements:
At the end of this course, the students will feel confident enough to practice the few new expressions and questions and interact with local taxi drivers, market and street vendors or shoe shine boys. Most importantly they will be able to approach the Quechua way of thinking.
